CASIS is very pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 CASIS-CSIS National Essay prize.

The top graduate paper was “Shadow of the Sun: Tracing Wagner During the First Year of Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion of Ukraine“, written by Michael Shirley (MA, CERES programme, University of Toronto).

The top undergraduate paper was “Opportunity to Adversary: Canada-China Relations in the 21st Century“, written by Matthew Kieffer (BA, Economics and International Relations, University of Toronto).

In addition to the prize money, Michael and Matthew will receive financial intelligence training through ManchesterCF. Both winners will also present their papers at the CASIS annual symposium in Ottawa on November 3, 2023. Congratulations to Michael and Matthew!

We would also like to congratulate the runners up, Grace VanVliet (University of Toronto) and Yasmine Nasereddin (York University), and thank all other candidates for participating. We look forward to announcing the details of the 2024 CASIS-CSIS National Essay in the near future.
